I’m sure many of you’ve heard the much-used and completely ridiculous argument against gay marriage: if men marry men, what’s to stop a man from marrying an animal or an inanimate object?
Well, in Seattle, a woman named Babylonia Aivaz married a building to protect it from demolition. I know, I know. I had the same reaction too. WTF?!?!?!
According to Seattle new affiliate WCTI:
Babylonia Aivaz invited the Seattle public to attend what she calls the ‘gay wedding’ to the building [this past] Sunday. The building is an abandoned warehouse that is in the process of being demolished. Aivaz hopes to save the space for a community center.”
While I appreciate her commitment to her neighborhood, I wish she didn’t use a serious civil rights issue as her platform. Though her purpose is to prevent the “gentrification” of the “neighborhood she loves,” her wacky stunt will only give Republican and Christian extremists more fodder to hurl against marriage equality proponents.
Aivaz is no doubt committed to her cause, but she is a nut job who deserves to just be committed. With that aside, Aivaz’s “marriage” is doomed to failure as her intended is still slated for demolition.
Here’s the video of the wedding if you want to see the crazy in action.
