Why Authors Need an Author Brand

As a relatively new author in the writing business, I’ve discovered I have a lot to learn. When my first book was published in October 2012, I was naturally ecstatic.

Yep, that's about how broad my smile was

Yep, that’s about how broad my smile was

After all, I had achieved a very important goal I set for myself when I decided I wanted to be published. I thought all I had to do to be successful was just keep writing and getting my books out to the readers.

I was

sadly_deluded-788737

There are so many fantastic authors out there in the m/m genre, and as a new guy, people had no idea who Jacob Z. Flores was. I had no clue that I needed to tell them. Sure, I wrote up an author bio that gave readers some insight to who I was, but I didn’t do anything else. After all, I didn’t see myself as this big corporate entity like Apple or McDonalds.

Why would little old me need to set up a brand?

Well, I needed to let readers know who I was, and that’s what an author brand does. It tells readers what type of books they can expect to read from me. It also gives them something to remember. After all, we associate the golden arches with McDonalds and the bitten apple with, well, Apple. I had given my readers nothing to associate with me.

EpicFail 2

Luckily, a dear friend and fellow author pointed out what I wasn’t doing. She became my Yoda, and I her willing padawan.

And her first question was a doozy!

Who are you as an author?

She had me take a good, hard look at myself. Not just the person I was at home, but the person I was as an author. I needed to discover what there was about me that set me apart from the other amazing authors out there.

Let me tell you, that was not only difficult but terrifying. I had no clue what set me apart from everyone else. As far as I was concerned, there was nothing unique about me. So, I turned to my friends and asked them how they would describe me.

Talk about opening a can of worms!

Talk about opening a can of worms!

I freely admit that I can be pretty stubborn and pissy at times, but did my best friends really have to jump all over those qualities right off the bat? Apparently so! It’s a good thing I love each and every one of them! Once they were done giving me a hard time, I learned some interesting things about myself. I won’t bore you with all the details, but there was consensus on the fact that I could be very sweet but also very spicy.

That was something I could build on!

Like a good padawan, I discussed being sweet and spicy with my Yoda. What did she say?

that-is-why-you-fail-Yoda-Quote-Masters-in-Philosopy-650x415

Yeah, so she didn’t like the sweet and spicy that much. But, hey, it was my first try. Luke Skywalker didn’t lift his space ship the first time he tried on Yoga’s swamp planet. I couldn’t expect to be successful on my first attempt either!

But I was on the right path. And through extensive training in the force, the phrase “sinfully charming” was born, a better combination of sweet and spicy that was neither feminine nor generic.

What does “sinfully charming” mean as my brand?

Well, it tells readers that I’m nice and also naughty, and that they can expect a combination of those qualities in their interactions with me, and in the books that I write. It also gives me an excuse to share all those photos of hot, barely dressed men on my social media sites and on my blog. Not that I needed an excuse, but now, I can say it’s just part of my brand. 🙂

YAY!!!!

YAY!!!!

But, I wasn’t done yet. As my Yoda explained, I had defined myself but I had more work yet to accomplish.

I hear ya, Homer!

I hear ya, Homer!

What do I have to do now?

Create the Brand, I Must

But wait? Isn’t that what I just did?

Apparently, not! I had only just begun. You see, I now had to think about the colors that would be associated with the brand, and the image that I wanted people to associate with Jacob Z. Flores, the author. This was pretty important.

Colors are powerful association tools. McDonalds’ colors are red and yellow. Apple’s color is white. We remember that because that’s a part of their brand. Now, I had to decide what colors I wanted readers to associate with me.

At this point, I became overwhelmed and just wanted to rush through the process. My Yoda, however, would have none of that.

patience-yoda

Yoda was right. I had to take my time. My author brand would be with me forever. I couldn’t rush the process. This was the career I wanted. After all, writing is what I want to do full-time, and I needed to make sure I got the brand right. Because my brand was going to be with me a very long time.

I took a deep breath and asked myself: what did I envision when I thought of “sinfully charming”?

Well, the image I saw in my head was a hot, barely dressed man in a tuxedo. That meant black and white were definitely in the running. How charming is a man in a tux? Yum! As for the sinful part, well, red was the natural answer.

proud-of-you-i-am-thumb

Finally, I’d done something right!

Not only had I gotten my colors, but I also had my visual. Now, all I needed was a tagline that captured the “sinfully charming” nature of my author persona and my books. Once I had that, Yoda put me in contact with the fabulous A.J. Corza who took the abstract ideas and created this.

Untitled-1.jpg

Which I think perfectly captures the “sinfully charming” author brand.

So, now I have my brand, and my website now reflects it as well. My readers have an idea of who I am and what they can expect from me and my books, and hopefully, I’ve given them an image they can remember. 😉

By combining that with well-written books, I’m doing my best to carve out a place for Jacob Z. Flores in the world of m/m fiction.

And that is part of the business.

Books Books and More Books Interview

Today, I’m interviewed over at Books Books and More Books. It was a good interview and lots of great questions were asked about my writing process, author bucket list, and writing advice. I also talk about my upcoming projects and share an excerpt from Moral Authority. If you’re interested in reading the interview, click here.

I hope to see you there. 🙂

Love in the Most Desolate of Places

I’m so excited because today I’m over at The Novel Approach, one of my most favorite blogs, which just happens to be run by the super fabulous Lisa. TNA is also home to other fabulous peeps such as Tina Marie and Jackie and my super adorable hubby. How could I not love it over there?!?!

Now, why am I over at TNA, besides the fact that Lisa and I love to drink? Well, I was lucky enough to be included as part of Wilde City Press week over at TNA. I talk about my WC release Moral Authority, and I even have a video of me reading an excerpt. To see my post about “Love in the Most Desolate of Places,” and watch the video click here. Also, the always fabulous Jackie posted a review of Moral Authority. You can read the review by clicking here.

Choose My Inspiration Winner Revealed!

I can’t believe that it’s time to reveal the winner of the Choose My Inspiration contest. It seems like just yesterday my husband and I were poring through the studs in our stable, painstakingly searching for the best stallions to trot before the public. It was a long, drawn out process of staring at half-naked, gorgeous men, but that was the sacrifice I was willing to endure for all of you.

I’m such a selfless individual, aren’t I? 😉

But alas, my sacrifice has finally borne fruit. After a long five-week battle, a victor has emerged.

Here is My Inspiration

Stud #16

Stud #16

And what an inspiration he is! Just look at that body! And the fur, well, that just melts my butter! I’m definitely inspired to write loads of fun for this stud. (Yes, pun intended)

But I wasn’t the only one who was inspired by Stud #16. He won 35% of the final round votes, so obviously many of you liked him too. If you’re interested in seeing those final tallies, click here.

As the winner, Stud #16 will be the inspiration for one of my main characters for the first book of my upcoming Key West Series. That novella is set to release in 2014.

But wait there’s more! This stud needs a name, and one lucky commenter won the right to name Stud #16.

What’s Stud #16’s Name?

Well, thanks to Jacquie Sawyer, Stud #16 shall now be known as Alan Bruce!

Alan will be having lots of fun in Key West, and I hope you will follow Alan into the pages of the first book of the Key West Series.

Thanks again to everyone for participating. Who knows? We might just be doing this again!

What’s New at My Blog!

Well, for those of you who’ve been to my blog before, you can already see what’s new here at “From Gay to Z.” Thanks to the fabulous, A.J. Corza (who is well worth the nominal fee), my site has a sleeker, more user-friendly appearance. When I first put my blog together, I had absolutely zero clue what I was doing. If I liked something, I added it. It was as simple as that. Apparently, that was problematic!

Oops! Sorry about that everyone!

Oops! Sorry about that everyone!

My “just add it” approach apparently made my site a bit too much and not very PC friendly. Who knew?

A.J. knew that’s who!

She went through my site and made it all prettiful. I know that’s not a word, but I like it and use it often.

Now, “From Gay to Z” is easier to navigate without all those distracting plug-ins that I thoroughly enjoyed because they were shiny and new. I’m easily distracted by things like thatBut hey, I own it, and I…

squirrel-2

What was I saying again? Oh yeah, my blog’s new look. That’s right!

I hope you’ll take a look around and let me know what you think. I’m pretty excited about the rico suave new design.

Also, tomorrow, I’ll be announcing the winner of the “Choose My Inspiration” Contest. So make sure you come back to see who won!

Blog Tour Detour #2: Guys Like Romance, Too!

I’m also at Guys Like Romance Too for my second blog tour detour. I discuss in detail the inspiration behind The Gifted One. If you’ve ever wondered what strange things lurk around my subconscious this might be a post for you. If you’ve never wondered, stop by anyway and see how truly strange I can be. I wonder what Freud would say about my dreams. I also share an excerpt, so if you’re interested click here and you’ll be instantly transported to Guys Like Romance, Too!

Character Interview with Gabriel of The Gifted One

Today, we conclude our two-part character interview of the main characters from my soon-to-be-released novel The Gifted OneIf you missed part one of my interview with Matt Westlake, click here.

The Gifted One

Today, I’ll be sitting down with the archangel Gabriel, who is currently residing in Houston, Texas, which is a loooooong way from his home in Heaven.

Gabriel, I must first thank you for actually coming to the interview. When I sent the request, I was uncertain if you would come. I know you are extremely busy and have many other more important tasks. So, once again, thank you.

Gabriel: It is true that sitting here answering questions is a frivolous activity, especially considering the magnitude of my heavenly duties. However, Matt requested that I accept the invitation, so I’m here at his behest. Therefore, you have him to thank for my presence. I, of course, will communicate your appreciation to him.

Um, thank you.

Gabriel: Once again, you are welcome.

So, why don’t we just get started then?

Gabriel: That would not only be wise but an efficient use of both of our time.

Okay, so I gather you’re not much of a talker. You seem far more task-oriented.

Gabriel: Indeed. I’m not an angel of words. If you want one who prattles on endlessly, then I’d be glad to see if my brothers Uriel or Raphael are available. They are certainly more lax with their time and how they spend it. I, however, am not. There’s a great deal Father has charged me with accomplishing. I see no need to chatter idly when there is a task to be completed.

And by Father, you, of course, mean God?

Gabriel: Naturally. God is the mortal word for our Father, but to me He is simply Father.

I hope you don’t think this silly, so please forgive me, but chatting with a heavenly being is not an every day occurrence. When you speak about God and the other angels, your references make you sound like a family. Is that the way you would describe your relationship with the other archangels as well as with God?

Gabriel: Most definitely. We are a family, and Father sits as the head of our family.

I have to admit that I find that rather intriguing. How would you describe your heavenly family? Do you share meals together and talk about your days? Are there disagreements or do all the angels get along?

Gabriel: First of all, we don’t eat. As immortal beings, we do not require sustenance or sleep, so no, we do not share meals together. We do, however, gather in the Throne Room upon occasion to discuss matters of great importance. My brothers and I, the archangels, are Father’s messengers in the world. We are charged with carrying out important duties as ascribed to our various functions. If the task requires mercy, love, justice, wisdom, healing, peace, or vengeance, one of us is dispatched to bring the matter to its appropriate conclusion, and sometimes, how each of us deals with the matter at hand can lead to disagreement.

My brother Michael and I are constantly at odds. Though I love my brother dearly, his tendency toward mercy and leniency is sometimes a slap in the face of vengeance. Not every situation is brought to resolution through compassion and forgiveness. Sometimes, the sword of retribution is the only appropriate answer.

So you prefer reprisal to rehabilitation?

Gabriel: Not at all. For those truly repentant of their sins, mercy brings justice and healing. However, Michael feels as if all are worthy of a second chance. That is not always the case. True evil walks the earth in various forms, and for those who embrace only the dark, I stand in wait to greet them.

I would assume the true evil you are referencing has something to do with the task Father has sent you to complete. Since you’ve been seen in close proximity to Matt Westlake in the past few days, I shall assume that the task is somehow linked to him. Is Matt the evil you must eradicate?

Gabriel: (extremely upset) Of course NOT! Matthew Westlake possesses a strength of character and soul that I’ve not had the pleasure of encountering in untold centuries. I’ve been sent to protect Matt from the evil that swirls wretchedly about him, and I would sacrifice my immortal soul to guarantee him but one more second of breath upon this earth.

I must admit that your reaction took me a bit by surprise. I hope you can forgive me for saying this, but you sound as if you’re in love with Matt. Are you?

Gabriel: (visibly shaken) I love all members of Father’s flock. It is my sworn duty to protect them.

I have no doubt about that. However, when you spoke of Matt, I couldn’t help notice how your eyes lit up. For most of our interview, you’ve been emotionally reserved, but with one mention of Matt, you’ve become someone else entirely.

Gabriel: Yes, well, I am charged with protecting Matthew Westlake. I take my duties extremely seriously. Your question attacked his character by assuming such a wonderful soul like Matt might be evil. I had no choice but to come to his rescue and defend him.

And that’s it? There’s nothing more to your feelings for Matt?

Gabriel: I will only say this. While I’m alive no harm will come to Matt from any creature whether it be from heaven, hell, or earth. On that, you have my word.

Okay, then, since you’ve brought it up. Why is Matt in such danger from creatures from heaven, hell, and Earth?

Gabriel: That is a question I’m not free to answer for a multitude of reasons. However, I can say this: Matt is an extremely special man, both to the future potential of the world as well as to those who love him. His unlocked potential makes him a target, and my physical presence in his life has…complicated matters. As a result, Matt is carefully scrutinized from above and below as well as locked in a dangerous dance with earthly agents intent on doing him harm. It is my job to see to it that he survives it all unscathed so that when destiny finally opens the door for Matt, he shall be able to walk through it. To accomplish that task, I stand ready to sacrifice all that I am for all that Matt promises to be.

Thank you, Gabriel. I appreciate everything that you’ve shared with us today, and I can tell by the sudden look in your eye that you have to leave.

Gabriel: I must. A storm is brewing outside, and I must make my way to Matt at once!

Good luck, Gabriel. To you, to Matt, and to whatever the future may yet bring.

The Next Big Thing Blog Hop

Tinnean tagged me as part of the Next Big Thing Blog Hop, and I couldn’t have been happier to participate! While I hate chatting about myself, I just absolutely LOOOOOOOVE talking about the books I’m working on. I’m kinda like an expectant mother who rubs her belly while discussing the baby names being considered and the color the nursery is going to be painted. It’s really an exciting time to be in the middle of a work, still trying to figure out all the details that will get me to the ending as I have imagined.

For those of you who don’t know me and have followed Tinnean’s link here, I’m a relatively new author. My first book 3 released from Dreamspinner on October 15. My second book, also, from Dreamspinner, is titled The Gifted One and will be released in March/April. Prior to Dreamspinner, I also self-published a book titled Moral Authority.

But, let’s talk about my current work in progress, which is why I’m here as part of The Next Big Thing Blog Hop.

1. What is the working title of your book?

When Love Takes Over is the title, and this book will be Book One of a series I’m calling The Provincetown Series. The books will all take place in Provincetown, Massachusetts, which is, in my opinion, one of the best places in the world. If you’ve never been or heard about Provincetown (or Ptown as it is most commonly referred to), it is a fabulous place on the tip of Cape Cod, where being gay is norm and where acceptance is everywhere. The town is rife with romantic potential with an eclectic cast of characters set amidst its windswept dunes, abundant starry nights, and warm summer days. Provincetown, however, can also present many obstacles to those who aren’t careful. There are no rules in Provincetown, and relationships both solid and newly formed can hit snags among the many scantily dressed men ready to party, the numerous clubs and events with free flowing alcohol, and a casual sexual attitude.

Each book in The Provincetown Series will focus on different main character(s) and chronicle their individual ups and downs as they navigate the sometimes turbulent waters of romance in a town filled with endless opportunities for love and heartache.

2. Where did the idea come from for the book?

My husband and I have vacationed in Provincetown every summer for the past 6 years, and we are currently in the middle of making arrangements for our return this summer. With as much time as we’ve spent there, I’ve witnessed couples destroyed by the surrounding temptations or made stronger and rise above their foibles. With all I’ve seen, I couldn’t help but turn those adventures into novels.

For When Love Takes Over specifically, I wanted to write a light-hearted, fun story about two men, who both had no intention of falling in love. They are polar opposites in almost every way. Zach is an introverted, insecure, struggling author, and Van is an extroverted, extremely confident, porn star. In Provincetown, they are looking for fun and fantasy to escape the problems in their lives, but after meeting each other, love takes over and sends them to a place neither of them ever expected.

3. What is the genre of the book?

This book is a contemporary m/m romance. There are no action/adventure sequences or murder plots. It’s all about the hilarity, hijinks, and happiness that can occur between two stubborn men who fight tooth and nail against a force bigger than the both of them combined.

4. Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

This actually required some thought as I actually used pictures from the Internet of what I imagined Zach Kelly (the author) and Van Pierce (the porn star) to look like, but if I were the casting director, I would choose Toby Stephens to play Zach and Channing Tatum to play Van.

5. What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

I have enough trouble writing a two page synopsis. Trying to come up with one sentence is almost impossible. But here goes: After a messy break up, Zach comes to Provincetown looking to find himself and his writing voice; instead, he finds the alluring Van, who causes him to re-think how he’s lived and loved.
6. Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency/publisher?

I’m actually planning on pitching the book/series to Dreamspinner, so keep your fingers and toes crossed for me!

7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

It took me almost two months to write the first draft, and boy, it was fun being able to throw myself back into Provincetown and experience it through the eyes of Zach and Van.
8. What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

That’s a hard question. I’d like to think that this novel has a Tales of the City Armistead Maupin-like quality, but that may just be in my own head. 🙂
9. Who or what inspired you to write this book?

Basically like I said earlier, my previous experiences in Provincetown inspired me. I wanted to capture the essence of the city and tell its unique story through the characters who seek solace on the tip of Cape Cod.
10. What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Well, there’s a pretty hilarious scene in a leather shop where Zach and Van first meet. Let’s just say there’s a rather rotund fellow trying to squeeze himself into a full body rubber suit, and what happens when he falls down sets the stage for the main characters to speak their first words to each other. Beyond that, there’s an underwear party, naked men traipsing in the dunes, and two rather hilarious drag queens named Penny Poison and Suzy Wroughtinkrotch (pronounced Rotten Crotch) 😉

Up Next is Lily Grace, who’ll continue the hop on January 14 and and E.M. Feeley Jr., who is scheduled for January 17. Stop by and check them out!

Top 5 Bad Tattoo Ideas

If you’re like me, you might find tattoos fascinating. I don’t have one myself because, well, I’m a wimp when it comes to inflicting pain upon myself. I’m not afraid of needles, and I take my immunizations like a good boy, but I personally don’t want to seek out someone to plunder my skin with a thousand needle strikes in order to place an image upon my body. Besides, I lack the attention span to be able to sit still for the hours long process.

However, I did find these really bad tattoos that did make me sit still long enough to scratch my head and laugh.

Bad Tattoo #1: Really? What possessed this young woman to want a picture of a Great White eating someone in her armpit? Perhaps it stinks like chum under there or something, and this is her way of warning people to stay away. I know it worked for me.

Bad Tattoo# 2: I know that love can conquer all, but I don’t necessarily concur with this statement! Next time this person gets a tattoo, I hope either he or his tattoo artist double check their spelling. This is one mistake whiteout can’t fix.

Bad Tattoo #4: This person gives new meaning to the word fanatic! I grew up with Bob Barker, and I enjoyed his tenure on The Price is Right, but this is going a bit too far! This tattoo won’t get this person any dates, and I doubt anyone will be screaming for him to “come on down!” This person should be neutered, not his pet!

Bad Tattoo #5: This one was funnier than just plain awful, but I just had to add it. If your arm pit hair length bothers you that much, just shave it off. No need to advertise that you want it trimmed. Makes me wonder if he has a weedwacker tattooed over his groin.
